Despite paying crop insurance premium under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana Scheme, farmers in Tamil Nadu have not received compensation for crop damage following the drought in 2016-17, Tamil Maanila Congress leader G.K. Vasan said.

According to the State government, ₹20,028 crore had been paid to the farmers through the insurance company, Mr. Vasan said in a statement.

“However, the various agencies have not paid this compensation amount to the farmers and are delaying the payments,” he said. Despite the issue being raised with various districts’ officials, no action was taken to ensure the compensation reached the farmers.

With samba cultivation under way in the State, it was imperative that the compensation be paid immediately to the farmers, he said. Farmers had already paid the premium of ₹403 per acre for this year as well, the TMC leader said.
