Motorists driving down Anna Salai and headed towards Simpsons on Monday were left surprised when they realised they could not move ahead past Tarapore Towers.

The road has now been closed to traffic flow in that direction and made a one-way for Metro Rail work.

Vehicles travelling in that direction will now have to go through Dams Road and Blackers Road to get back on Anna Salai and proceed further. Though there has not been any formal announcement from the Chennai traffic police, the diversion was in place from Tuesday morning.

Motorists said they were confused due to the sudden change. “Usually such diversions are announced in the papers. I had to go to the Anna Salai post office, but did not know how to get there. I parked my bike near the Mount Road dargah and walked,” said K. Umesh, a marketing executive.

Another commuter said she had to pay a higher fare to the autorickshaw driver due to the diversion. “I was heading to Shanti Theatre with my friend. But the auto driver, who was also surprised to see the diversion, charged us Rs. 10 more, because of the detour that he had to take before dropping us at the theatre,” she said.

Traffic police officers said Chennai Metro Rail officials had requested the temporary diversion. “It will be in place till their work is completed,” said the traffic police officer.

CMRL officials were unavailable for comment.
