Communication facilities will be of the highest order during the forthcoming World Classical Tamil Conference in Coimbatore, said Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology A. Raja, while speaking to reporters here on Saturday.
Pointing out that the mega event is expected to attract lakhs of people, he said everything possible will be done to prevent congestion in telecommunication.
Referring to discussions held with various service providers in Coimbatore recently, Mr. Raja said it was decided to set up about 130 Basic Transmission Service (BTS) facilities.
In addition, about 20 BTS services would be provided near the venue and some in places such as the Nilgiris and Erode as the event would increase the flow of visitors. Around 250 broadband connections would be provided.
Stating that temporary boosters would be erected near the airport, he said that all the service providers had given helpline numbers.
3G spectrum auction revenue
Mr. Raja said that the revenue from 3G spectrum auction had exceeded expectations. On account of it and the auction of spectrum for wi-fi services, the government was better off by over Rs.1.6 lakh crore.
Pointing out that a number of factors had contributed to the whopping revenue, he said that the question of safeguarding the social responsibilities of the BSNL would be taken up with the Finance Minister.
