Islam has been facing a threat from misguided groups that have been propagating an ultraconservative view of the religion, K. Saleem Ali, former IPS officer, said.

Speaking at the 125{+t}{+h}anniversary of Anjuman-e-Himayath-e-Islam, he said, “There is deliberate high-pitched intolerance and radicalisation of some youth. Also, the concept of jihad and blasphemy has been distorted by some. These misguided views have to be taken out in a systematic way.”

N. Ram, chairman of Kasturi and Sons Limited, said there is misuse of religion for political and electoral gain and the communalisation of politics has become a huge threat to the country. “It has also become a fashion to say secularism is outdated. This is a dangerous fallacy,” he said. Governor K. Rosaiah said the Anjuman-e-Himayath-e-Islam, founded in 1890 by the Prince of Arcot the IVth Nawab Mohammed Munawwar Khan Bahadur, has grown into a pioneering organisation catering to the educational needs of destitute children.

Former advocate general Habibullah Badsha and Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali also spoke.
