The Water Resources Department is in the process of removing commercial structures along courses that drain into Adyar river. On Saturday, nearly 40 commercial structures that had encroached upon a channel along Thirumudivakkam Main Road were pulled down.
According to WRD officials, the six-km channel runs between Pazhanthandalam through Thirumudivakkam and carries rainwater to the Adyar. Two more commercial structures, which had encroached upon the Kovur branch channel, were removed near Moondram Kattalai. The channel branched out from the Kovur surplus course that carries excess water released from Chembarambakkam lake.
S. Kanniyappan, resident of Moondram Kattalai, said this would help reduce flooding in the neighbouring areas, including Kovur.
Similarly, nearly 35 commercial structures along the Adyar were removed at Anakaputhur this week. Officials said after the drive, the width of the river has increased from 40 m to nearly 100 m and nearly one acre of land has been reclaimed.
