The Central Crime Branch of the city police on Wednesday arrested trustees of Sri Muthukumaran Educational Trust on charges of attempting to obtain approval for a polytechnic institution by submitting forged building planning permits.
Police said the group’s managing trustee A.N. Radhakrishnan (75), his wife Gomathy Radhakrishnan (65), who is the group’s chairperson, and trust manager Manoharan (51) were arrested by a CCB team on Tuesday morning and remanded in judicial custody later in the evening.
The CCB team began a probe recently following a complaint lodged by the southern regional wing of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) stating that trustees of the Sri Muthukumaran group had submitted an application with forged documents to obtain sanction for a new polytechnic to be set up at a campus in Chikkarayapuram village near Mangadu.
Charges of cheating
“AICTE authorities who scrutinised the petition found that the applicants had submitted forged Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority building plans. They alerted the office of the Commissioner of Police. The trustees attempted to withdraw the petition after realising that they were exposed,” said a CCB investigating officer.
A case on charges that included cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy was registered against Radhakrishnan, Gomathy and Manoharan.
