A 19-year-old college student from the city has complained that she was raped by a man posing as a policeman at an isolated location in Semmenchery on East Coast Road on Monday evening.
Police said the medical report had confirmed ‘sexual activity’. They have registered a case under Sections 376 (rape) and 363 (abduction) based on the victim’s complaint to the police.
According to police, the teenager and her male college mate were waiting near the Akkarai check-post after an outing at the nearby beach. Around 4.30 p.m. a middle-aged man clad in white shirt and khaki trousers came to the spot on a motorcycle.
“He told the duo that he was a policeman and that the local inspector had asked him to bring the girl for questioning regarding a case. He forced her to ride pillion on his bike and told her friend to come to the Semmenchery police station to pick up the girl later,” an investigation officer said.
The suspect, who was wearing a thick gold chain, reportedly took the girl to a lodge in an isolated spot in Semmenchery, saying the investigating officer was inside. “The girl claims he tied her to the bed and raped her. He then brought her out and left her in custody of a shopkeeper nearby ordering him to send her home by public transport,” the officer added. She contacted her friend around 5.30 p.m. and told him what had happened.
They both went to the Semmenchery station to register a complaint. The case was transferred to the Neelangarai police station. Investigators claimed that the complainant was recounting different versions of the story, while being questioned.
The boy also said that he went to the Semmenchery station, where he was told that there was no policeman matching his description in that station.
Later, he went to the Neelangarai station where he got the same answer.
Meanwhile, investigators examined the CCTV footage obtained from the camera installed at the Akkarai check-post, which shows images of the girl riding pillion with a man.
