A 23-year-old engineering student from Andaman & Nicobar Islands was arrested by Chennai Police for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 22-year-old law student.

Police sources claim that Karthika Shakthi, who also comes from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, was pursuing her third year of law at a private institution in Thiruverkadu.

On July 11, she is said to have committed suicide by hanging in her hostel room.

Police inquiries with her friends and her call records and phone messages led them to Nishant, who is pursuing his engineering at a private college near Tambaram. Nishant and Karthika reportedly knew each other from childhood and, of late, they had not been on talking terms.

Thiruverkadu police booked Nishant under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code and he has been remanded. Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline can be reached at 044 24640050 and the State helpline at 104.
