Well-stocked libraries and vibrant study circles in Chennai continue to contribute towards sending candidates to strengthen the ‘steel frame' of the nation that includes the prestigious Indian Administrative Service.
According to the Civil Services Main Examination 2011 results published by the Union Public Service Commission on Friday, nearly 70 candidates who prepared for the examination using the facilities in Chennai have emerged successful. A total of 910 candidates from the country were recommended for appointment by the UPSC.
Even though the UPSC has taken various measures to control the influence of coaching institutes on successful candidates, the delicate interlink of coaching institutes and good libraries by the State Government in Chennai has continued to have an impact on results this year too.
Most of the successful students said they had used the facilities in popular coaching centres such as All India Civil Service Coaching Centre, Manidhaneyam Free IAS IPS Coaching Centre, Ganesh IAS Academy, Shankar IAS Academy and libraries such as Connemara, Devanaeya Pavanar and Anna Centenary Library.
Chennai success lies in this collective maze of coaching centres with their own specialisations where candidates gain collectively.
Some of the candidates who used the facilities in Chennai to emerge successful also include Neeraj Kumar Singh, who hails from Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
Even though Mr. Singh is a student of humanities from IIT-Madras with its own library, his name is on the rolls of coaching institutes such as Shankar IAS Academy. He has secured 11 rank.
“Preparation matters but interactions with people matter more,” says Mr. Singh, talking about how perspectives on public policies come after a lot of discussion and analysis.
Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy's Manidhaneyam IAS IPS Coaching Centre, 34 of whose students were successful this year, has helped many poor students clear the examination. The institute, located in CIT Nagar and Anna Nagar, has emerged as a hope for poor students from Tamil Nadu who aspire to clear the UPSC exams.
Free books, coaching and accommodation at the institute have attracted many aspirants to the institute and helped them excel in the examination.
Principal of All India Civil Services Coaching Centre P. Prem Kala Rani says that most of the successful aspirants in the city were on the rolls of the centre. This State government institute has helped over 47 aspirants clear the examination.
The State government provides free coaching and accommodation for 300 selected students in the All India Civil Services Coaching Centre on 12 Main Road Anna Nagar.
Successful candidates such as M. Sundaresh Babu, R. Ramachandran, T. Sreejith and K. Sasikumar said that all the facilities in the city including libraries, coaching centres and sagacious mentors as a whole helped them clear the examination.
Popular options for successful candidates in the city include public administration, geography, Tamil literature, psychology, sociology and political science.
