The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) will regulate parking of trailers in Sathangadu Iron and Steel Market shortly.

The decision to float tenders for putting in place a system for regulation and monitoring of the parking of vehicles in the market complex was taken at a meeting of the Market Management Committee on Thursday.

The CMDA would earmark parking space for around 250 trailers in the Market area. The parking in the market complex is haphazard without any regulation, which has been a cause of concern for the dealers of iron and steel in the market. Traffic congestion and cases of theft have been reported in the area on account of lack of monitoring and regulatory mechanism, said employees of warehouses in the market complex.

The market is located in an area of 203 acres in Kathivakkam on Tirvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetti Road with access to Chennai Port and Tiruvottiyur railhead. It was developed to decongest the iron and steel market in George Town.

The market was planned to be the country's most modern market of its kind with infrastructure, amenities and services for smooth conduct of business and full exploitation of growth potential in the iron and steel market.

A chunk of the 850 plots in the lay out have already been allotted for traders. Construction work on at least 150 plots is under way.

Representatives of major stockists of iron and steel in the market said that the conditions are expected to improve following the construction of concrete roads, street lights and police station in the complex. Electrical cable work has been completed and the improved street lighting system would become operational soon.
