The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) will provide an opportunity to owners of unauthorised constructions to rectify the violations.
It will lock and seal multi-storied commercial buildings that have already been issued demolition notices, according to an official who participated in the Monitoring Committee meeting on Friday.
The Monitoring Committee constituted by the High Court asked the CMDA to take action on unauthorised constructions within one month. The Committee would conduct a review next month on the action taken against unauthorised constructions in the Chennai Metropolitan Area.
After almost three years, on March 15, 2011, the Supreme Court vacated the status quo order granted earlier on regularisation of unauthorised constructions by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.
“The Monitoring Committee has asked the CMDA to re-issue demolition notices to 48 multi-storied commercial buildings within a month. More areas of the CMA have to be surveyed to identify unauthorised constructions,” said M.G.Devasahayam, monitoring committee member.
“Priority will be given to multi-storied commercial buildings according to the High Court order,” he added.
“The Monitoring Committee also suggested the constitution of a combined task force comprising officials of the CMDA, Chennai Corporation, local bodies, Metrowater and TNEB to identify unauthorised constructions and take effective action,” said Mr.Devasahayam.
Need for joint action stressed
The Monitoring Committee stressed the need for joint enforcement action by the CMDA and the Chennai Corporation.
