The Tamil Nadu Science Forum has petitioned Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to consider bearing the educational expenses of all students from government schools who scored the top three ranks in the State and districts in Class XII examination.
In a release, the members of the forum said around 250 government schools had recorded cent percent pass, equalling the performance of private schools, though many of them came from poor background.
The State first student with 1,179 marks had lost her father and her mother was a casual labourer in a private company.
The second ranker from Coimbatore and third ranker from Kancheepuram, who scored 1,177 marks were also from poor families, said State education coordinator Theni Sundar.
Similarly, the three toppers from government schools in Theni district hailed from families which cannot afford college education, he said.
The district topper, who scored 1,137 marks, hails from a farmer’s family while the second ranker is fatherless and his mother is a casual labourer.
The third ranker is the son of a quarry worker.
The toppers in most districts hail from poor families and cannot pursue higher education.
The State government should take over their educational expenses, the forum has suggested.
