Chief Minister Jayalalithaa may soon flag off the test drive of the first Metro train currently stationed at the Koyambedu depot.
Officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said they have already approached the Chief Secretary of the State seeking a date from the Chief Minister and the test drive may be done by the end of the month.
“Since it is a significant event we have invited the Chief Minister. We are making arrangements for the test drive which will be conducted very soon. The train will be shifted from the workshop to the 800-metre test track inside the depot on which it will run. We know the public may be eager to see this, but we may not allow them to witness this event for security reasons,” said an official of CMRL.
Only after it runs through this test will the train be transported to the elevated track. For more than a month now, the four-car train has undergone various routine tests to gauge its quality.
The first Metro train that was manufactured at Lapa in Sao Paulo in Brazil reached Chennai on May 31 and was subsequently taken to the depot in Koyambedu which is the operational control centre for the Metro from where officials can monitor the movement of trains across the city.
