CM must implement old pension scheme: Karunanidhi

July 14, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday urged Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to cancel the new pension scheme and make an announcement that the old pension scheme would be implemented.

In a statement, he said the government had constituted a committee headed by retired IAS officer Santha Sheela Nair on February 26 after the government employees went on a strike for 10 days. Chief Minister made an announcement in the Assembly on the committee and as per the government order it was supposed to submit the report by June 26.

The AIADMK had also said in its election manifesto that based on the committee report efforts would be taken to implement the old pension scheme.

However, the committee did not hold talks with office bearers of the association of government employees or representatives of teachers’ associations. It merely received the petitions given by the various associations.

The pension amount for employees could accurately be calculated in the old pension scheme based on their work experience but in the new pension scheme there was no guarantee that the employees would get a particular sum as pension, and that was the primary reason for the strike.

As the report had not been submitted , there was a suspicion that the committee was formed with the sole purpose of ending the government employees’ strike, Mr. Karunanidhi said.

Unaware of any extension of time being given for submitting the report, the DMK president said the government employees were feeling totally disappointed and enraged.
