Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday announced a solatium of Rs.3.5 lakh to the families of two journalists who died in harness.
C. Nagendrapillai, assistant editor of the Tamil daily ‘Dinamalar’, Chennai, died in May 2007 after putting in 23 years of experience and Veera Jeeva Prabhakaran, chief reporter of another daily ‘Dinamani’, in April 2009 after serving for 19 years.
Under the government scheme implemented since September 2006, the government would provide Rs. 2 lakh each to legal heirs of journalists who died in harness after 20 years of service; Rs. 1.5 lakh if the number of years of service was 15 years and Rs. 1 lakh for 10 years.
An official release stated that Rs. 2 lakh had been sanctioned for the wife of Nagendrapillai and Rs. 1.5 lakh for the wife of Jeeva Prabhakaran.
