The Chennai City Police, in order to do their bit for environmental protection, has taken up greening work by planting saplings.

Chennai Police Commissioner A.K. Vishwanathan had instructed all the police stations to seriously take up tree planting projects in their localities with the help of residents welfare associations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Mr. Vishwanathan also followed suit by inaugurating a mega tree planting drive in Red Hills on Tuesday.

A senior official of the city police said the greening project was initiated by the Police Commissioner as part of World Environment Day celebrated on June 5 last month.

At Payasampakkam near Red Hills, about 2,000 saplings were planted.

The city police have planted a total of 28,004 tree saplings all over the city of which 13,222 saplings have been planted in Ambattur district alone.

A local police official in K.K. Nagar said more than 100 saplings were planted in various parts of Ashok Nagar and K.K. Nagar in vacant places, schools and parks.
