Parks are normally associated with the aged. However, one section of seniors may not be associated with them anymore.

The Corporation has decided not to allow security personnel older than 50 years to serve at parks. The move, according to the civic body, is aimed at improving security at public facilities. Following the demand by Corporation Councillors on beefing up security in over 500 parks, the Corporation will ask contractors maintaining parks to hire personnel less than 50 years of age. “Residents have demanded security measures at parks to be upped. Most of these personnel are senior citizens who are unable to regulate unauthorised entry of people into parks. ,” said M.S. Baskaran, corporation councillor of ward 194.

The Corporation currently maintains parks through contractors who hire security personnel to guard these facilities. “Stringent conditions on age limit for security personnel may improve safety at parks. A study is under way to explore alternative methods for hiring security personnel,” said Mayor Saidai Duraisamy.

The civic body is planning to form groups under the national urban livelihood mission to select suitable security personnel. Under the existing scheme, one contractor is responsible for maintenance of the entire range of facilities in a park. Officials will continue to monitor the system with field visits and a mobile-based application.
