China scholar no more

D. S. Rajan, director of Chennai Centre for China Studies died of a massive heart attack on Saturday at a New Jersey Hospital. He was 74. He had participated in the just-concluded two-day Conference on ‘China in the World’ hosted by Kean University, New Jersey where he made a presentation on ‘China in Indian Ocean’.

Mr. Rajan was fluent in Chinese language, and interpreted and commented on China’s history, culture, economy and political developments, and more importantly India-China relations. As the Director of Chennai Centre for China Studies (CCCS), his reports and writings were greatly valued by China scholars around the world, and notably, by Chinese political observers and journalists.

He is survived by wife Padma, an accomplished Japanese linguist, daughter Hema and son Sridhar who works in the U.S.

His body is likely to be flown to Chennai for cremation.
