The Hindu Young World ’s 25th anniversary celebration was not all about having fun.

Instead, socially-conscious and enthusiastic children gathered near the Ashtalakshmi Temple to be a part of the beach clean up team, on Sunday.

The Hindu Young World , in association with the Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI), took up the initiative to clean up the stretch between the temple and Thiruvanmiyur beach.

Arun Krishnamurthy, founder of EFI, stressed on the need to clean up this stretch as it served as a nesting ground for Olive Ridley turtles every year. He also said participants were well-informed and sensitised towards the issues that plague the environment.

For over two hours, children picked up trash including nylon ropes, plastic bags, cloth pieces and thermocol. They were asked to segregate this into bio-degradable and non bio-degradable waste. Several buckets of trash were emptied into the dustbins provided by the Chennai Corporation.  Many volunteers from EFI worked closely with the participants to create awareness and impress upon them the need for regular clean-ups. It was a satisfied group of participants that left with the promise of volunteering for similar causes in the future.
