After playing a hide and seek for a few days, showers hit many parts of the city on Wednesday.

Though the city has been experiencing cloudy days and a dip in day temperature for some time now, rains had been evading several areas. On Wednesday, residents woke up to thunder and light showers.

The maximum temperature fell to 33.7 degree Celsius and 34.5 degree Celsius in Nungambakkam and in Meenambakkam respectively, which is nearly two degrees less than the average, thanks to thick cloud cover and morning showers. Several areas, including Egmore, T. Nagar, Perambur and Taramani, saw showers that lasted for 10-15 minutes in the morning.

Among the weather observatories in and around the city, the one in Madhavaram recorded 25 mm and that in Poonamallee received 22 mm. The weather stations in Nungambakkam and Ennore registered 3.5 mm and 2 mm respectively. However, the automatic weather station in Meenambakkam recorded only a trace of rainfall.

While the morning was pleasant enough, residents said it grew sultry by evening.

Meteorological department officials said convective activity, which is a common feature in summer, contributed to the sharp showers and a dip in temperature.

Residents may escape the warm weather for some more days and there may be showers till the weekend.

The easterly or south easterly winds prevailing over the city are keeping the temperature down. Westerly winds that bring in hot air are yet to set in. The city may have day temperature of 33 degree Celsius till Friday.
