Chennai to have misty, dry weather

However, the subdued monsoon does not mean the end of rain spells

December 18, 2013 08:17 am | Updated 08:17 am IST - CHENNAI:

The city will experience misty mornings and largely dry weather for two or three days this week.

Cloud cover on Tuesday brought down the day temperature to 28.8 degree Celsius in Nungambakkam, two degrees below normal. Meenambakkam recorded 29.6 degree Celsius, which is close to the normal for this season. Officials of the meteorological department said the murky sky and drizzle had increased the minimum temperature from 19.3 degree Celsius recorded on Monday to 22 degree Celsius on Tuesday.

Though winter has set in over the city, this does not rule out the possibility of rains, said officials. Chennai has so far received 436 mm of rain since October 1 and is still short of 380 mm for the season.

S.R. Ramanan, director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said clear skies would bring in mist over the city. But the subdued monsoon does not mean the end of rain spells. He cited the example of cyclone Thane that made its landfall end of December in 2011.

The meteorological department has forecast that some areas may experience drizzle and early-morning mist until Thursday. The minimum temperature will be close to the normal of 22 degree Celsius.
