The Chennai Corporation will identify rented premises for night shelters in 40 more localities in the city.

The civic body has commissioned 30 night shelters so far. The decision to use rented premises has been taken because of lack of buildings to set up the facility.

The civic body has been accommodating the homeless in its night shelters in Koyambedu, Vallal Seethakadhi Nagar, Kodungaiyur, Kannnapar Thidal, Doomingkuppam, Thattankulam and Chintadripet.

There should be one night shelter for every lakh persons in the city. The number of night shelters required for the city has been arrived at based on the directions of the Supreme Court.

The Chennai Corporation will identify NGOs for maintenance of the new shelters, said an official of the Corporation.

The civic body will make decisions on locating night shelters based on a comprehensive study of the homeless.

The study involves collection of a complete set of data pertaining to the homeless person’s native village, reason for leaving ancestral hometown, language, caste, education, existing habitation, family, and other social and physical conditions.

The study will also explore options for rehabilitation of such residents and also take measures to prevent homelessness.
