Two Chennai-based students - Gayatri Sankunni Nair and Sujay Subrahmanyan - are among seven students who have been awarded a total of $50,000 under the 2010 TOEFL Scholarship Programme to pursue higher education by Education Testing Service (ETS).

Gayatri, who has a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Stella Maris College, will receive $5,000 to do her Masters in Management at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Sujay, currently a student of the National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi, will receive $10,000 to study management at the London Business School.

ETS, the creator of the TOEFL test, started the scholarship in August 2009 to honour seven high-performing Indian students, awarding $50,000 to students who were accepted at a college or university in the U.K., the U.S. and Canada for postgraduate study.

Of the seven TOEFL scholarship winners for 2010-2011, three will be attending universities in the U.K. three will be studying in the U.S. and one will be pursuing academic study in Canada, a press release issued by ETS said.

Over 300 competitive applications were received for the 2010 TOEFL Scholarship program.

The scholarship winners demonstrated an outstanding ability to communicate in English, effective leadership skills, and well-rounded balancing of strong academics and extra-curricular activities, such as community service, the release said.
