Chennai Schools record best results

Chennai Higher Secondary Schools, run by Chennai Corporation, have registered the best results so far with 84.80 per cent of its students clearing the Class XII examinations.

With 4,701 of the 5,543 students clearing the examination this year, the 27 schools have recorded an increase of six percentage points when compared to their performance last year. The results were announced on Friday.

Boys registered a pass percentage of 78.80 and 87.97 per cent of the girls cleared the examination.

Mayor M.Subramanian announced that the first 25 students from the Chennai Higher Secondary Schools who are admitted to Law Colleges would be given Rs.5,000 every year until they finish their degree.

Chennai Higher Secondary School at Virugambakkam was the best performer with a pass percentage of 98.5. V. Pandiyarajan, the topper among Chennai School students with a score of 1130, was one of its students. “My teachers, particularly my headmaster, encouraged me. I am thankful to them. I want to join Electronics and Communication Engineering,” he said.

“A total of 135 of our students cleared the exam. Ten students secured more than 1000,” said M. Kandaswami, headmaster of the school.

Chennai Higher Secondary School, Gangadeeswarar Koil, Purasawalkam, stood second with a pass percentage of 96.70. Of the 184 students who appeared for the examination from the school, 178 passed and four scored over 1,000 out of 1,200 marks.

Chennai Higher Secondary School, Koyambedu, recorded a pass percentage of 96.70 per cent.

The toppers come from families belonging to the weaker sections of the society with no opportunities for special coaching.

P. Tamil Selvi, a student of Chennai Higher Secondary School, Budha Street, Korukkupet secured the first rank in food preservation (with biology) in the State.

“As my parents are not educated, our teachers are helping us very much. The result has reflected my hard work and the blessings of my teachers,” she added.

Her father is a rickshaw driver. Her mother P.Nirmala said that their family depended on the guidance of Chennai School teachers for her child's higher education. “I want to join B.Sc Catering,” said Tamil Selvi.

The second rank was secured by J. Divya of Chennai Higher Secondary School, Budha Street, Korukkupet. Sivakami of the same school got the third rank.

T.Rupenthar, a student of Chennai Higher Secondary School in Choolaimedu, secured the first rank in Photography in the State. He scored 599 out of a total mark of 600 in Photography.

“I want to become a good cameraman in the film industry,” he said. K. S. Manoj and M.Hari Prabhu of the same school scored 583 and 569 respectively in the subject.
