Roads named after people to be reviewed

October 01, 2014 03:06 am | Updated April 18, 2016 09:04 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Roads named after individuals without approval from the government will soon be renamed.

Following a resolution by the Chennai Corporation Council on Tuesday, more than 30,000 roads are under the scanner.

“Hundreds of roads have been named after individuals without approval from the government. Residents of a neighbourhood will not be permitted to name roads after individuals,” said an official. The council also passed a resolution to remove names of the Mayor or councillors from unauthorised boards.

The Corporation had earlier planned to rename 50 roads, which are now named after foreigners. These included Haddows Road, Harrington Road, Sterling Road, McNichols Road, Taylors Road, Ormes Road, Greams Road, Montieth Road, Pantheon Road, and Eldams Road. However, the proposal was shelved.

Other resolutions included those on planning permission after the handover of open space reservation, demolition of a shopping complex near Ripon Buildings, and the inclusion of Chennai in C40 Global Network.

The networks are active working groups of cities with commonly identified opportunities, interests or priorities pertaining to climate leadership. The networks facilitate knowledge transfer, peer-to-peer exchange and provide direct support to cities developing local policies, programmes or projects.
