July 29, 2013 08:31 am | Updated 08:31 am IST - CHENNAI:

In a surprising turn of events on Saturday, a police inspector was arrested for drunken driving after he lost control of his vehicle and rode over a footpath.

He was later released on bail. Nobody was injured in the accident.

On Saturday night, Sivalingam, an inspector attached to the Mylapore station, was returning home from a college reunion. “He had consumed alcohol at the reunion party and was driving back late,” said a traffic police officer.

When he reached Greenways Road in Raja Annamalaipuram, he lost control and rode over the footpath. “The left wheel of the car was damaged in the process. The inspector escaped unhurt. We took tests and confirmed he was drunk at the time of the accident,” said the traffic police officer.

The Adyar traffic investigation wing registered cases for rash driving and drunken driving. “He was arrested and released on bail later,” said a senior traffic police officer. The police said departmental action may be initiated against him.
