Two years after opening its first service, Chennai Metro Rail has launched its mobile app for Android phones. From route information to feeder services, the app called Chennai Metro Rail app, has exhaustive information on every important detail needed for a commuter.

For instance, it not only gives the location of each station and the nearest landmarks, but also elaborates the other facilities in the station such as availability of link bridge and parking in stations. Each station is also given a colour — blue line (elevated) and green line (underground). It lists out the number of mini buses (feeder services) available from stations too.

When a commuter wants to know how to travel from one location to another, the app’s route information shows the cost of the journey, the distance covered and the number and names of stations the train will pass through. The train timings and the platform that commuters should take to reach their respective destinations are also mentioned in the app. If a commuter wants to know the nearest Chennai Metro Rail station from their location, the app gives directions and the time of travel too. Interestingly, it gives the weather forecast and details of tourist spots in the city.

According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the app will soon be available on iOS platform too. “Also, we are working to add the travel recharge facility in the app wherein commuters can recharge their smart cards. We also have a tie up with SBI Buddy, a mobile wallet,” an official said.

Social media buzz

So far, there has been over 1,000 downloads for this app. Some commuters are already raving about the app in social media platforms. Abdul Razik through his handle @abdulrazik97 posted: “#ChennaiMetro's new app which was released earlier this week is top notch in every way. Far better UI than Delhi/Bglr/Jaipur metro apps.”
