Chennai Metro Rail fares may hit Rs. 50

April 12, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - CHENNAI:

The highest fare at Chennai Metro Rail may hit Rs. 50 when the next stretch between Little Mount to Chennai airport becomes operational. Currently, the fares for the stretch between Koyambedu and Alandur, distance of 10 km, are between Rs. 10 and Rs. 40.

According to sources in Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the fares may be hiked by Rs. 10 and reach Rs. 50 for a trip between Koyamedu and Chennai airport — a distance of about 15 km.

‘Only for single trip’

“Discussions are still on. A final decision will be taken close to the launch of the second stretch. But if it is finalised, this increase may be applicable only for those going on a single trip from Koyambedu to Chennai airport,” an official said.

When fares were for the first stretch were announced in June last year, many were unhappy as they deemed it too high for public transport.

Patronage hit

Experts feel the high fares have affected patronage. V. Ramarao of Traffic and Transportation Forum said not many will be able to afford a ride from Koyambedu to Chennai airport if the rate is fixed at Rs.50.

“They have to remember that it is public transport and fares should be priced nominally. The other Metro Rail services in the country are not priced this way,” he added.
