Over 1,400 Ganesha idols, which were taken out on procession amidst heavy police security, were immersed in the sea at different parts of the city on Sunday.
Except for a stabbing incident in Palavakkam, the immersions went on peacefully till dusk.
The idols erected at different parts of the city with police permission by different groups including Hindu outfits were taken to designated spots in Kasimedu, Ennore, Palavakkam, Tiruvottiyur and Pattinapakkam for immersion in the sea.
Devotees transported the decorated idols of varied sizes in lorries, tempos, load autorickshaws and even bullock carts through city roads with police personnel keeping vigil to avoid any untoward incidents enroute. The immersion spots also saw heavy police presence.
More than 100 idols were immersed in north Chennai and no clashes or agitations were reported. However, a man was stabbed by a member of his own group when the procession they were part of reached Palkalai Nagar in Pallavakkam. Police said an argument between the two led to the stabbing. The victim was admitted to a hospital immediately by police. His condition is known to be stable.
Earlier in the evening, on Wallajah Road, a large Ganesha idol being transported in an open vehicle fell on some devotees and police personnel walking alongside. A few persons suffered minor injuries. The idol was soon placed on the vehicle again and transported for immersion at sea in Pattinapakkam, sources added.
