Chennai Customs has launched a massive search operation to prevent sale of foreign-made firecrackers not permitted for import, following intelligence that attempts were made to sell the smuggled goods at retail outlets.

According to a press release from the office of the commissioner of Customs (exports), these firecrackers are manufactured using dangerous and hazardous chemicals that can ignite or explode spontaneously, causing accidents and endangering lives, and posing threat to health and environment.

Special Customs teams, under the supervision of higher Customs officials, are conducting surprise checks at various retail outlets and godowns in and around the city. The department has also issued advertisements to caution the public against purchasing them, the release added.
