The Chennai Corporation has suspended two employees following allegations pertaining to ‘bogus entry’ in birth certificates.
“One sanitary inspector had allegedly misused the password of an official in Alandur to issue a birth certificate. The other sanitary inspector had failed to supervise the process. After the passport office sent a reference, the Corporation’s health department found the birth certificate was not authentic,” said a Corporation official.
The complainant had named one of the sanitary inspectors, who is alleged to have taken a bribe for issuing the certificate, the official added. Further investigation is under way.
Around 1.1 lakh births are registered every year in Chennai Corporation and certificates are issued at the zonal offices free of cost if the event is registered within 21 days.
