September 18, 2013 09:29 am | Updated June 02, 2016 01:01 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Officials of Airports Authority of India (AAI) inspected the new international terminal of Chennai airport on Tuesday.

AAI chairman V.P. Agrawal and a member of the Planning Commission visited the international terminal and the secondary runway of the airport. The move is a precursor to the pre-bid meeting scheduled to be held sometime early next week.

The government, in the first week of September, sought request for qualification (RFQ) from private parties for privatisation of Chennai airport.

“The chairman will have to brief prospective bidders during the pre-bid meeting next week. So, he visited the new terminal and secondary runway to assess the situation at the airport,” said a AAI official.

Members of the Airports Authority Employees’ Union (AAEU) protested the privatisation move on Tuesday.

A couple of weeks ago, minister of State for civil aviation, K.C. Venugopal, had inspected the new terminals.

The new terminals at the airport were marred by several delays before they were commissioned and grapple with various engineering problems, after opening too.
