When an auto ride went awry

June 18, 2014 10:46 am | Updated 10:46 am IST - CHENNAI:

When Preethika and her aunt got into an auto on Sunday evening, not only did they not get what they bargained for, but also, allegedly, faced verbal sexual abuse.

Her post on the Facebook page of the Chennai city traffic police went viral after it was made on Monday afternoon. Preethika recounted her experience to The Hindu . She said they had caught an auto to travel from Anna Nagar East to Chinthamani and the driver refused to turn the meter on. She said they then settled for Rs. 40. When they got off and handed him a Rs. 50 note, he refused to give change, saying he did not have it and demanded he be paid Rs. 50.

“My aunt immediately told him she wouldn’t and was about to go inside a shop to get some change. When he realised that we were not going to pay him Rs. 50, he started abusing us,” she wrote. When she pointed out that he had neither turned on the meter nor worn his uniform, the auto driver allegedly made a lewd remark. She also said that the driver seemed to be drunk.

Preethika said she had also filed a petition with the Chief Minister’s Cell. A senior officer of the traffic police said they were tracking the auto driver.
