A white tigress housed in the Vandalur zoo is the latest to be adopted by a corporate firm.

The two-years-and-nine-months-old tigress, Chandra, has been adopted by Golden Homes.

Zoo authorities said sponsors had to pay Rs. 1.3 lakh a year for adopting a tigress. Each day, for six days a week, the animal is provided seven kilograms of beef besides liver. The animal is starved one day a week, they added.

Balasingh George, chairman and managing director, Golden Homes, said news of tigers being poisoned to death had prompted him to act against such atrocities.

Following a discussion with zoo authorities, he had selected Chandra for adoption.

Based on feedback and the success of the initiative, the company planned to reach out to bigger tiger reserves such as Bandipur and Ranthambore National Park, he added.
