Thermal imaging to look for survivors

June 30, 2014 12:04 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 06:48 pm IST - CHENNAI:

With no clue yet on the number of persons trapped in the debris, the Tamil Nadu police have roped in the expertise of the department of aerospace engineering, Madras Institute of Technology.

After deploying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to capture live visuals of the disaster site during the day, a team of engineers, led by Senthil Kumar, associate professor, used thermal imaging cameras to look for those trapped alive under the debris.

“The priority should be in rescuing those who are trapped and battling for life. It is more than 24 hours now since the building crashed. We are using thermal imaging cameras to detect live activity in the debris. The system can sense body temperature and movements,” Dr. Kumar said.
