The smell of burnt wood was the only reminder, on Sunday, of the fire that destroyed the historic building housing the main branch of State Bank of India (SBI) on Rajaji Salai, a day earlier.
A team from Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) inspected the accident site on Sunday.
Upset over the damage to the heritage structure, but relieved there was no loss of life, SBI general manager Sanjiv Chadha said on Sunday that the three bank branches would be up and running from Monday.
Mr. Chadha said senior bank officials, including chief general manager P.S. Prakash Rao, were present throughout the day to take stock of the damage to the fire-ravaged building. Giving details of the location of the three branches in the building, he said the strong room was quite safe in the sealed building.
The senior bank official said it was too early to talk of what lay in store for the damaged building. He said the bank would take further action based on the report from IIT-M’s structural experts who inspected the building.
Customers would be informed of the relocation of the three branches through the media, he said.
