The Chennai Corporation on Tuesday launched training sessions in self-defence for girl students.

Mayor Saidai Duraisamy inaugurated the session in Thiruvanmiyur. Vajra, a social service organisation, has adopted the Chennai Corporation school in Thiruvanmiyur for imparting Krav Maga, a martial art from Israel, to girl students of class VIII-XII. “We will train 360 girl students. We want to impart the significance of learning self-defence,” said Pooja Malhotra, Founder, Vajra.

Girl students will be trained for 45 minutes every week. The skills will help girls escape challenging situations on the street, she said. The school will have two trainers for the 360 students. The civic body will rope in more martial arts trainers, who will adopt Corporation schools in their neighbourhood. “The Chennai Corporation is yet to design a suitable training module for boys. Some have suggested the same training for them. It is yet to be decided,” according to a teacher.

Most of the 282 Corporation schools are likely to benefit from the training sessions this year.
