Police crack down on Tambaram traders

It will be possible to ease traffic flow in Tambaram and ensure quick access to the markets only after traders occupying the road margins are removed

December 22, 2014 07:56 am | Updated 09:01 am IST - CHENNAI:

The police will act tough against traders in an attempt to prevent them from misusing road space in Tambaram.

Recently, they disconnected power supply illegally drawn by several traders.

Survey undertaken

A police team made an elaborate survey of the market areas on MRM Street, Abdul Razaack Street and Shanmugam Road in west Tambaram recently.

P. Saravanan, deputy commissioner, St. Thomas Mount, warned traders against misusing road space and causing hardship to pedestrians.

Mr. Saravanan said if traders continued to encroach upon public space, they would take punitive action.

The traffic police said it will be possible to ease traffic flow in Tambaram and ensure quick access to the vegetable and grocery markets only after traders occupying the road margins are removed.

Loss of revenue

At least 100 shops continue to function in Tambaram, misusing commercial power supply connections, and causing loss of revenue to the government, the police said.

The Tambaram municipality has sent a proposal to the department of municipal administration and water supply department to decongest the stretch, but there has been no progress.

If implemented, it will be a boon to small traders and people visiting the markets, a trader on Shanmugam Road said.
