A 48-year-old man, reported to have run into bad debts, killed himself by jumping into the Adyar river from Thiru.Vi.Ka. Bridge in Adyar, on Saturday evening.

According to the Adyar police, Amir Jaan, a resident of Anbazhagan Street, Palavakkam, scaled the wall of the bridge and jumped into the river, a little past 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Passers-by informed the police control room. A team of firemen rushed to the spot to rescue him. However, late in the night, the search was abandoned as there was a strong current in the river. On Sunday morning, the body was retrieved.

Amir ran a laundry service in Mylapore. He had recently injured his legs and had been walking with the help of crutches.

After questioning family members, the police said he had taken a huge amount as loan and could have taken the extreme step after being unable to repay the loan.

A case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (death under mysterious circumstances) has been registered.
