R. Rajagopal (88), popularly known as ‘Kartik’ Rajagopal in the fine arts arena, died on Sunday morning at his residence in Abiramapuram.
Founder-secretary of Mylapore Fine Arts Club, he served as its secretary for 23 years. He had a penchant for promoting amateur drama troupes and has encouraged several stalwarts by providing a platform for staging their inaugural plays.
Director K. Balachander, Cho, Y.Gee Mahendra, Mouli, Visu, Komal Swaminathan and many others staged their plays under his watchful eyes in MFAC, said a friend.
After leaving MFAC, he was involved in the launch of Kartik Fine Arts in April 1975. He received the Kalaimamani for his contribution to music in 2006. He is survived by a son and daughter.
