On Sunday, three girls from Chennai Corporation schools will be the first ones in their families to tackle the JEE (Advanced) examination; two will also be the first to finish class XII.

With just four days left, B. Shyamala, Fathima Shabana and L. Pavithra who made the cut in the JEE (Main) exam and qualified for the JEE (Advanced) examination are hard at work. The advanced examination determines eligibility for admissions into the IITs.

“I am concentrating on mathematics,” said Shyamala, a student of Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Perambur. Shyamala, whose mother works as a cook, helps out her mother in the morning before sitting down to solve model papers.

“At first, my mother did not understand the value of the JEE (Mains) results, but now she is very proud,” said Fathima Shabana, whose father works at a tiffin stall. A student of Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Saidapet, she wants to become a computer engineer. L. Pavithra, of the same school, who scored 94 per cent in the State board class XII exam, aspires to become a mechanical engineer. “Other than working out papers, my focus is on completing the test on time,” she said.

An effort by Chennai Corporation and FITJEE, the three girls were among the batch of students from Chennai Corporation-run schools who have been receiving coaching by FITJEE.

R. Rajan, student mentor and regional manager, FIT JEE,said that these students have been receiving coaching since they were in class IX. If they get admission into the IITs, FITJEE will bear the expenses,” he said.
