Fishermen protest

November 28, 2014 08:24 am | Updated 08:24 am IST - CHENNAI:

A tussle between two mechanised fishing boat associations, over the use of engines above 150 HP, has led to over 600 boats going on strike at Kasimedu fishing harbour.

E. Raghupathy, president of Chennai Mechanised Boats Fishermen Welfare Association, said another association was demanding that their boats not fish in the waters between Pulicat and Kovalam, up to a certain distance.

“This will affect our livelihood. We demand that the State government verify all the boats in the harbour and certify that our boats are within the permitted limit of 150 HP,” he said.
