In a show of support for former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, the Tamil Nadu Film Exhibitors’ Association and the Tamil Film Producers Council plan to stage a protest against the verdict of the special court that found her guilty in a disproportionate assets case on Saturday.

A press release, undersigned by R. Paneerselvam, general secretary, Tamil Film Exhibitors’ Association, said that all film screenings in the State would be cancelled on Tuesday, and members would observe a day’s fast at the State guest house in Chepauk. The fast will be held at the association’s premises on Poes Road, according to the release.

In a letter to the police, the Tamil Film Producers Association had sought permission to observe a ‘moun vrat’ or a ‘vow of silence’ and a day’s fast at the State guest house in Chepauk to protest against what it termed ‘trumped-up charges’ and an ‘unfair verdict’ against Ms. Jayalalithaa.

Sources said actors and other constituents of the industry will join the protest on Tuesday.
