‘Escorts of students should carry ID cards’

November 19, 2014 08:05 am | Updated May 23, 2016 04:56 pm IST - CHENNAI:

People escorting children to school and back home should carry identification cards, the city police have told school managements.

Senior police officers convened a meeting with city school representatives at the police commissionerate on Monday evening, which saw over 200 people taking part. Security of children, while on campus and on their way back home, was the key subject under discussion.

“We have been advised to issue ID cards to people who drop and pick up children. We have also been told to periodically update the card details in the school database. The police have insisted upon the installation of CCTV cameras at important points on campuses,” said a representative of a Kendriya Vidyalaya school.

School managements have been asked to keep a watch on van and autorickshaw drivers transporting children to school, and they too will have to carry ID cards issued by the schools.

Parents will have to notify the school management in the event of a change of drivers.

Chaos outside schools was also discussed at the meeting, with senior police officers offering to help school authorities with managing the problem, a participant said.
