June 07, 2014 09:19 am | Updated 09:19 am IST - CHENNAI:

Students of DD Medical College met health minister C. Vijaya Baskar and senior officials of the health department on Friday.

An official said the meeting was held following a direction of the Chief Minister. Representatives of students belonging to the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 batches, which were de-recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI), and some of their parents were present at the meeting.

The students have been demanding that they be admitted to government medical colleges. “We told the students that the State government had supported their cause and acted as per a court order to accommodate them in government medical colleges. But they have not been admitted so far due to legal impediments,” the official said. He said they would take steps to explain the plight of the students to MCI.

A student, who attended the meeting, said the government has assured them of taking up the issue with MCI. “The officials also assured us that they would take steps to enable us to continue our medical education this year,” she said.

The students will stage a protest near the college in Tiruvallur, demanding its closure, on Saturday. Earlier, about 100 students of the two batches had tried to stage a road roko near the minister’s residence on Greenways Road.
