DD College students attempt hunger strike

August 23, 2014 08:03 am | Updated 08:03 am IST - CHENNAI:

Students of DD Medical College, Tiruvallur, attempted to go on a hunger strike on Thursday night.

On Friday, when seven of the students — six women and one man — fainted, they were taken to Government Stanley Hospital. However, the police said the fast was called off on Friday afternoon.

On Thursday afternoon, around 50 students had attempted to gather in front of the Secretariat but were rounded up by the police and taken to a parking area opposite the building, and later, to a community hall at Kondithope police quarters.

Four student representatives of the college — that was de-recognised by the Medical Council of India in 2012— were taken to the Secretariat, where they submitted a petition to the Chief Minister’s special cell, said one of the students.

“Our petition is for the government to either take over our college or admit us to government medical colleges,” said the student.

There are a total of 216 students in two batches, both of which are not entitled to be accommodated in government medical colleges, said the Madras High Court.

A senior health official said the government was not against the students, but could not do anything in this case.

“MCI is the regulatory body here, and has not allowed these students admission to government medical colleges. How can we admit them then?” he said.
