It was a befitting send-off for a musician who will be deeply missed by his fraternity and fans. To the resounding rhythms of a drum played by Sivamani, the last rites of Mandolin U. Shrinivas were performed in the city Saturday evening.
Shrinivas died at a city hospital on Friday, succumbing to a lung infection. He had been ailing for a while and had received a liver transplant recently.
The funeral procession began at his home and reached Besant Nagar crematorium in the evening. Apart from family members, a number of fans of the musical genius accompanied the procession or gathered at the crematorium.
Sivamani said Shrinivas’ death was a great loss for the family and the world.
“He showed how a Western instrument could be adapted to Carnatic music. I have known him from childhood and it was his untiring practice that took him to such dizzying heights. Similarly, he was a willing teacher wanting to teach his students everything he knew. He was a happy, ever-smiling person,” he said.
