Hundreds of autorickshaw drivers participated in a flash protest near Egmore railway station and Royapettah on Tuesday morning, alleging police harassment during drives to enforce the meter system in the city.
The protest took place in Egmore after traffic and transport department officials tried to impose a fine of Rs. 2,500 on an autorickshaw driver.
“The charge against him was that he carried four people in his vehicle,” said A.L. Manoharan, general secretary, Vadachennai Auto Thozhilargal Sangam. He claimed the passengers were government officials. “It was out of fear the driver agreed to ferry them.”
Over 200 drivers gathered in front of the station. “We dispersed after a senior police officer arrived and agreed to release the vehicle after charging a small fine,” he added.
Meanwhile, another agitation took place in front of Royapettah Government Hospital, condemning alleged harassment by officials during raids. J. Seshasayanam, general secretary, Madras Metro Auto Drivers Association, said unions were not involved in the protests.
“The drivers are angry because they are being treated like criminals. We don’t mind the officials taking action against drivers if passengers lodge complaints,” he said.
However, passengers have expressed satisfaction with the action taken. “Now there is a sense of fear among the drivers. Similar action should be taken in all government departments,” said M. Vinayakamurthy, of Mandaveli.
