Facilities similar to Amma canteens will soon be commissioned in Chandigarh, said Chandigarh Mayor Harpool Chander Kalyan.

Speaking to mediapersons after visiting the Amma canteen at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital here, on Monday, Mr. Kalyan said a team of 25 officials visited the city to study its welfare measures including Amma canteens.

“The food is hygienic and delicious. Our officials are studying the system,” he said.

The scheme will be redesigned to suit conditions in Chandigarh.

“The Amma canteens provide hygienic food for thousands of poor people. The model is worth emulating. We congratulate Chief Minister Jayalalithaa,” he said, adding that thousand of Chandigarh residents would benefit from the scheme.

“We will also create employment for the poor in Chandigarh by commissioning such welfare measures,” he added.

Senior deputy mayor Heera Negi, deputy mayor Davesh Moudgil, ex-mayor Subhash Chawla and head of opposition Arun Sood also accompanied the Mayor. The delegation interacted with beneficiaries, women self-help group workers and Chennai Corporation officials at the Amma canteen.

Officials, including joint commissioner Rajiv Gupta, studied all aspects of operations including procurement of raw materials, recruitment of workers, drinking water supply, pricing, and management.
