The city witnessed two fire accidents on Thursday night. A fire at Chetpet substation plunged hundreds of houses in the locality in darkness.
In the second instance, in an early morning fire at Pushpa Nagar, Nungambakkam, several houses were gutted.
Around 11.20 p.m. on Thursday, a transformer at Chetpet substation caught fire due to some oil leak, damaging the transformer and cables. The supply to several localities, including Harrington Road, Chetpet and parts of Poonamallee High Road were disrupted as a result.
A Tangedco official said power supply would be restored in phases. Until 10 p.m. on Friday, some of these areas continued to be plunged in darkness.
Many residents said Tangedco local officials did not respond to their queries on the outage.
Huts guttedAn early morning fire due to an electrical short circuit at Pushpa Nagar 7th Block in Nungambakkam, resulted in a raging fire, destroying more than 50 huts.
Ministers R. Vaithilingam and S.P. Velumani, and mayor Saidai Duraisamy visited the spot and directed revenue officers to provide relief of Rs. 5,000 to the 124 families affected by the fire.
